That little horseshoe-shaped light on your dash — the tire pressure warning light — is one of the most common lights drivers see, and one of the least understood. Here’s a plain explanation of what it means and what to do about it, for every make we service.

What TPMS actually is

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Most cars built in the last couple of decades have sensors that keep a quiet eye on the air pressure in each tire. When one tire’s pressure drops outside the range the manufacturer set for your car, the light comes on to let you know.

Why it seems to come on more as the seasons shift

Tire pressure moves with temperature. As mornings and evenings cool off, the air inside a tire contracts a little, and pressure can drop enough to trip the light — even if nothing is actually wrong with the tire itself. That’s completely normal and one of the reasons this light tends to show up more as the weather changes.

What we check

When you bring a car in with the light on, we don’t just glance at a gauge. We check the actual pressure in all four tires against what your specific vehicle calls for, take a look at each tire’s overall condition, and make sure the sensors themselves are reading correctly. Every vehicle has its own recommended pressure, so we always go by what the manufacturer specifies for your car rather than a generic number.

What to do when the light comes on

  • If the light comes on and stays on steady, there’s no need to worry — just plan to have it checked.
  • If the light is flashing, or you notice the car handling differently, it’s worth having it looked at sooner.

Either way, the simplest thing to do is let us take a look rather than guessing at which tire or what the number should be. It’s a quick, calm check.
