Smog Checks
We perform California Smog Checks and STAR Smog at our Chula Vista shop. We do both, and we can help diagnose and repair vehicles that need work to pass.
Smog Check and STAR Smog — we do both
OREC Imports is a California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) STAR Smog Station, and we also perform regular California Smog Checks. Bring your DMV registration renewal notice — whichever type your car needs, we’ll take care of it.
We’re also CTC (Clean Truck Check) credentialed for the emissions side of the heavy-duty vehicle program. We do not service diesel engines.
Who needs a smog check in California
California requires a smog check at certain registration intervals for most vehicles. New residents have a window after registering a California vehicle to obtain a check (when one is required).
Common exceptions:
- Newer vehicles within their early renewal cycles
- Electric vehicles
- Motorcycles
Smog failure diagnosis and repair
If your vehicle hasn’t passed a smog check, we can look into the cause. Common contributors include:
- Oxygen sensor issues
- Catalytic converter condition
- Evaporative emissions (EVAP) system leaks
- EGR system issues
- Engine misfires affecting the catalyst
We’ll identify the cause, provide an estimate, and — after the repair — perform the retest.
What actually happens during the test
The test looks at what your vehicle is reporting about its own emissions systems and, depending on the vehicle and the program, what is coming out of the tailpipe. Modern cars monitor their emissions equipment continuously, and the readiness status of those monitors is part of what gets checked.
If you would like the longer plain-language version, we wrote one: how does a smog check work. And if you are trying to work out which type of test your renewal notice is asking for, the difference between Smog and STAR Smog covers it.
Every make we service
We smog Asian, domestic, and European vehicles alike. European service is a particular strength of ours, and it is worth knowing that European platforms often route emissions monitoring through more modules than average — which is one reason having manufacturer-spec diagnostic tools on hand matters when something needs looking into.
We do not service diesel engines.
Why a check engine light matters here
If your check engine light is on, that is directly relevant to a smog check, because the light means the vehicle is reporting a fault in a monitored system. Getting it scanned before you come in for the test is generally the more straightforward path.
We can scan it and tell you what the car is actually reporting. Our plain overview of what the check engine light really means explains why the light on its own does not tell you much.
We explain before we do
If your vehicle needs work to pass, you will hear what we found, what it does, and what your options are — in plain language, before anything is ordered. You decide how you would like to proceed.

Frequently asked questions
- Do you do regular Smog Checks or only STAR Smog?
- We do both. OREC Imports is a California BAR STAR Smog Station, and we also perform regular California Smog Checks. Bring your DMV registration renewal notice and we will take care of whichever type your vehicle needs.
- What is the difference between a Smog Check and a STAR Smog?
- A STAR station meets a higher standard set by the Bureau of Automotive Repair and is licensed to test vehicles that the state has directed to a STAR station specifically. Your DMV renewal notice will say if yours needs one. We are certified for both, so either way you are in the right place.
- What should I bring with me?
- Your DMV registration renewal notice is the main thing. It tells us which type of test the state has assigned to your vehicle.
- What if my vehicle does not pass?
- We can look into the cause. We will identify what is behind it, explain what we found in plain language, provide an estimate before any work begins, and perform the retest once the repair is complete.
- Do you smog diesel vehicles?
- No. We do not service diesel engines. We are CTC (Clean Truck Check) credentialed for the emissions side of the heavy-duty program, but diesel engine service is not something we take on.
